Texas State will Celebrate Transfer Students During National Transfer Student Week 2023
SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State University welcomed nearly 2,700 new transfer students this fall. During the week of October 16, the university community will celebrate National Transfer Student Week (NTSW) in honor of new transfer students, its current students who originally transferred to Texas State and the professionals who support transfer students through their journey.
This is the fourth year the university will celebrate National Transfer Student Week, an initiative of the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students. Project Maestros, a Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions Title V grant, brought NTSW to Texas State in fall 2020.
“We celebrated National Transfer Student Week for the first time in October 2020,” said Hana Fuller, director of Project Maestros. “During the height of the pandemic, when we were largely operating in a virtual environment, it was important to connect transfer students with their peers and the TXST community. Our goal was to build transfer student pride on campus.”
During this year’s weeklong celebration, the Transfer Center will host events like Transfer Student Study Hall, where students can connect with other students, learn good study habits and take a break from studying by playing Texas State lotería. Students can also participate in the “Transfer Trick-or-Treats,” which will feature not only treats but also information about student resources at TXST.
The Transfer Center will share transfer student stories that are self-submitted, and it will award Texas State Transfer Champion to selected nominees. The Texas State Transfer Champion is a faculty or staff member who has made a difference in transfer student journeys. These stories and Transfer Champion nominees will be recognized on social media and on the fourth floor of Alkek library on the mobile panel display.
“This week is about acknowledging and celebrating the value transfer students add to the university community,” said Lauren Ibarra, director of Transfer Initiatives. “Transfer students comprise many identities and journeys. During National Transfer Student Week, we celebrate all transfer students, the various paths they took to get here and the people who helped them along the way.”
National Transfer Student Week at Texas State is a Transfer Center initiative. The Transfer Center is an activity of the Generación STEM grant, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) STEM and Articulation Program.
